Tip Number Four is so incredibly, absolutely, positively important for artists! Yet it is so elegantly simple.

“DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY. ” If someone, anyone, says no to your artistry or your song, don’t sweat it. This business is built on rejection. Remember, “NO” means “Next One.”  (I touched on this subject in the two most recent editions of my music newsletter. You DO get it, don’t you?)

Quick Rewind

Tips One, Two and Three were shared previously, and hopefully now in your personal skill set. Right? These tips were designed to make your entry into the entertainment business a bit easier. I sincerely hope you find them valuable.

Don’t Take It Personally

Unfortunately, rejection is part of the path. As unpleasant as it may be, it is an essential part of the process. Face it, the music business, in fact, ANY part of the entertainment business, is subjective. Your fans may love you. They may think you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. But that gatekeeper may think, “Meh, not so much.”

To which your response should always be, “Thank you!”

Get over it. Quickly. Move on.

Remember that “No” means “Next One.”

Here’s More

One of my favorite analogies goes something like this:  You’re at your favorite restaurant, and you’ve just had an absolutely marvelous dinner. The server comes over to your table, makes eye contact, smiles and asks, “Would you like some coffee?” to which you politely reply, “No, thank you.”

What?

Does that mean you hate coffee?

Does that mean you think the server is lame and no good at her job?

No. It simply means you don’t want any coffee right now.

The server moves on and goes about her job without a care in the world. No harm, no foul.

Get it?

The same goes with career moves when you meet rejection. It rarely, if ever, has anything to do with you personally.  You or your song simply aren’t what they are looking for right now.

Get it?
